What a Difference a Rank Makes.

Ever been told – if you are not on page 1 of Google, you are nowhere? I have been and more times than I care to remember. But what real difference does it make if your website appears on page 1 of Google compared to page 2, or 3 for that matter? You may have also heard that more than 90% of online searchers do not go past page 1 on Google. They tend to refine their search or search for a different keyword altogether.

Keyword Tool

There are keyword tools that will estimate the number of searches done each month for thousands, no millions of keywords and the most popular is the Google keyword tool. However it falls short as it does not help you estimate how many visitors your site will get for different ranks. It certainly does not calculate revenue or profit based on rank.

In a test we ran for one site for one keyword, the difference in revenue was very substantial based on rank 1 in the SERP versus rank 10. We searched the keyword hair loss and rank 1 produced over $168,000 in revenue and rank 10 produced less than $11,000. So yes, what a difference a rank makes.


It is wise to start any SEO campaign with a high degree of caution and ask yourself these fundamental questions.

What is my URL optimized for now?

Go to the Google keyword tool and enter your home page URL. The tool will list keyword suggestions and these are ordered as relevant to your page. If the searches at the top of the list are low volume then it tells you that your page is not targeting the right keywords.

Should I make changes?

Do I include keywords with higher a volume of monthly searches? It’s of no use to rank at the top if only a handful of people are searching that keyword.

How search engine friendly is my site?

Do I have the page titles, descriptions, Meta tags etc. in place? Although on page factors are not the major factor in where you rank in the SERPs, they are important and relatively easy to fix. Whatever you do, do not start optimizing until your pages are search engine friendly.
